What is a Mazda VIN Decoder?

The current VIN system—implemented in 1981 for all vehicles sold in the US—was put into place so that people could check a vehicle’s history, ensuring it hasn’t been stolen or involved in a major accident. However, over the last three decades, performing a VIN search has become exponentially difficult, thanks to the sheer volume of new makes and models flooding the market.

There are a few ways to make sure a VIN belongs to a Mazda, the first of which is to ensure the second digit of a Mazda’s VIN is either an M, F, or Y. If it is not one of those, we recommend you perform a vehicle history check.

Mazda: A Brief History

In 1931, Mazda began manufacturing three-wheeled trucks, and all was running smoothly until WWII broke out and they began manufacturing military weapons. All hopes of returning to building vehicles were scuppered, however, when their Hiroshima-based factory was destroyed by an atom bomb.

Unperturbed, in 1949 Mazda began manufacturing three-wheeled trucks once again, and in 1960 the company started to manufacture for the mass-market. In 1969, they teamed up with Nissan and Toyota, one of the biggest deals of their history.

They now manufacture luxury sports cars, and are in the top twenty vehicle manufacturers in the US.
