The 9th digit is the check digit, decoded using a weighted formula. If the result mod 11 is 10, the digit is “X.” Otherwise, it’s 0–9. If you see “X” in the 9th position, it’s not an error—it simply means the VIN’s math came to “10.” A single typo in any earlier digit will invalidate the check digit, causing some official VIN lookups to reject the entry.
In North America (and some other markets), the 10th digit represents the model year, which can differ from the actual calendar year of production.
Many European-delivered Mercedes-Benz vehicles don’t strictly rely on this digit for “model year” in the same way the U.S. does. Cars officially imported into North America should contain the model year code. E.g.: A car built in September 2024 is sold as a 2025 model. In registration documents, the 10th digit will correspond to 2025.
The 11th digit is utilized to designate the plant/assembly line:
